Greg Leonhard

Captain

Captain Greg Leonhard is from Kinsman, Ohio, and graduated from Badger High School and the Trumbull County JVS.

In 1983, he joined the U.S. Army as a Military Police Officer, serving three years in West Germany and at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. Capt. Leonhard was honorably discharged in 1986 at the rank of Sergeant, having completed the Platoon Leadership Development Course and earned the Army Achievement Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

In February 1986, Capt. Leonhard was hired at the Ashtabula County Sheriff's Office as an undercover drug agent before going on the road as a deputy sheriff. In 1998, Capt. Leonhard was promoted to Sergeant and was assigned to various shifts on the road as a supervisor. In 1990, after an officer-involved shooting in Jefferson where a sheriff's K-9 was killed, Capt. Leonhard was awarded a medal of valor.

In January 1993, Captain Leonhard started as a part-time Sergeant/Asst. Chief with the Kinsman Police Department and remained with the department until 2003.

In 2003, Capt. Leonhard was promoted to Lieutenant in charge of the Road and Communications Divisions of the Sheriff's Office. He served on several boards for the Sheriff's Office, including the 911 Committee, Emergency Management Board, Ashtabula County Joint Vocational School Public Safety Class Advisory Board, President of the Ashtabula County Crime Clinic, the Kent State Trumbull Police Academy Advisory Board, and the Law Enforcement Preparedness Committee. He was also the first law enforcement officer to complete the Ashtabula County Leadership Class. Capt. Leonhard has completed First Line Supervisor and Mid-Level Management training.

In 2009, he joined the Trumbull-Ashtabula Group Drug Task Force (TAG) as an investigator and later became assistant commander.

Capt. Leonhard later became Commander of the newly created drug task force in Ashtabula County and served in that position until his retirement in January 2022.

After retirement, Capt. Leonhard served as a bailiff/security officer for Trumbull Eastern District Court. Capt. Leonhard also served as a Kinsman Township Trustee for approximately 15 years, resigning to accept this position with the Sheriff's Office.

He is also Commander of the Kinsman American Legion #506 and is serving as a Trustee for the Kinsman Public Library for approximately the last 12 years. He is also a member of the OneOhio Regional 7 Opiate Board appointed by the Trumbull County Township Association and Trumbull County Commissioners.
